How Does Hair Grow

Each healthy hair goes through a growth cycle that consists of three phases which are Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. The hair grows only in Anagen phase.

Anagen - or the growth phase - is when the hair actually grows. This phase lasts for around 2 to 8 years. During the phase of growth papilla cells rapidly divide to make the hair shaft which after being keratinized gets pushed outside out of the follicle. Simultaneously, the follicle grows deep into the skin to get all the required Vitamins and products. People with longer growth phase can grow very long hair unlike those with shorter one. With an average hair growth rate of around 1 centimeter (or 1.5 inch) per month if left uncut hair might exceed the length of 30 to 120 centimeters (12-48 inches).

What Causes Hair Loss

Normal cycle of hair loss and growth

Before speaking about causes for hair loss it is important to define two cycles of hair loss and growth. The first one of them is called normal and lasts for more than two years. Each month a hair grows approximately one centimeter in length. About 90% of all hairs are in this growing phase while only 10% - in a resting phase. The resting phase lasts for 3 to 4 months, after which the resting hairs get pushed out by new hairs.
